    20 Favourite Feet Tapper Songs

Some crowds at weddings get in the mood to sing along with their favourite verses of a song.

Any effort to force your guests to sing will come off as half-baked, so rely on your DJ to play these with the right timing.

Sing along songs generally don’t work until the reception is well underway, once the guests are feeling merry and comfortable.

And don’t overdo it: No more than two or three of them should be played consecutively. Otherwise, it quickly becomes tiresome.

Tips for Listening to Your Wedding Songs & Building a Playlist

It’s a lot of fun to pick out the songs that you’ll play for all of your wedding traditions.

The two of you will be thinking of the songs you’ve had as favourites all of your lives, or the songs that mark your special moments.  So how do you make your choices?

    wedding-rings

There is a simple and easy way to listen to your songs in full before you buy them on CD or from iTunes.  Most of you already know about this place-but, for the less internet savvy people, it’s…

    YouTube!

All you do is type the name of the song and the artist into the YouTube search bar.

    At Last Etta James Screenshot

You’ll find that most of the time someone has posted a clip with lyrics,  or you may even find the original “official” video clip to the song.

It’s also an opportunity to give covers by other artists a listen.

Although some songs may not play with top quality sound, you will be able to listen to the entire song, in most cases.

This is an advantage over iTunes or Amazon, where you get only a thirty second sample-which might not be enough to determine if that song is the right one for your wedding tradition.

Update as of 2013 – iTunes now offers a listen of up to a minute and half on most songs.

    Finding Lyrics to Your Songs

You can also find the lyrics for just about any song that’s ever been commercially released. It’s as simple as listening to it on YouTube.

Getting to know the lyrics for say your first dance is extremely important as you most likely want them to be optimistic.

Some songs have great music for a first dance but the lyrics may be inappropriate for the occasion or taint the great music.

Just go to your Google search bar and type the song’s title and artist, followed by the word “lyrics,” into Google. If you’re an internet novice, you’ll find this is very easy, and 99% of the time you will go straight to the lyrics you’re seeking.

Try it out by going to Google and typing this into the search bar:

    Getting Your Songs onto CD

Most engaged couples want to assemble all their favourite songs onto one CD.

Some newlyweds just love to have a wedding music CD so they can listen to the songs that have meaning for them any time they wish.

Others decide to go all out with this and create music CDs as wedding favours for their guests – which does have copyright implications!

The first step is sourcing your music and the easiest, legal way to do this is to install iTunes. If you haven’t already installed it, it’s available here:

    http://www.apple.com/downloads

iTunes lets you listen to a clean thirty second sample of each song. The cost of the full song is only $1.69 each in Australia or 99 cents in the U.S., with comparable prices in other countries.

In 2009 Apple began offering DRM-free songs for $1.29 (U.S. dollars). That means you can purchase higher quality downloads without being restricted on the number or types of devices that you can use for song play.

While iTunes fully expects at least half of its five-million-song library to be DRM-free possibly by the time you read this, the less expensive versions will still be available.

Whichever version you choose, once you have purchased your music you can then easily burn it onto an Audio CD (within iTunes). This makes it playable in any CD player.

    Important iTunes CD Burning Tip

TIP – Tick the option to “Include CD TEXT” data to Audio CD in the iTunes Preferences -> Advanced -> Burning section.

This will allow your Mp3 Ripping software to pickup up the Track Name & Title information from the CD so you do not have to type it out again!

One thing to note with iTunes and most other legal song download sites, is songs from some major artists such as ACDC, etc., are not available for download as of yet.

The record companies have not released the digital download versions. So you will have to buy these songs on CD…

Once you have all your songs, either on an iTunes backup CD-and it makes sense to back-up your purchases in any event-or an original purchased CD, you can then format shift (rip) these back into an MP3 format.

    Just search for CDEX..

    http://www.download.com

How you categorise your music is really up to you. Software which will help with your MP3 tags (this is information to categorise your MP3’s) and sorting is Tagsmart.

Get into the habit of adding the correct tags early to your MP3’s in your database-building days.

Before you realize it your collection will have grown quite large, and adding the tags will be a headache. Do it now, and this will save you a lot of time in years to come.

    MP3Tag Feeware Software

The best software for playing your music for general listening is Winamp.

This allows songs to seamlessly fade into each other and create huge playlists you can save with little effort.

Winamp can also be useful for dinner music playlists at weddings and it’s also a perfect software for use in restaurants and cafés.

  • Ideas for a Successful Wedding Playlist

Ideas for a Successful Wedding Playlist

Below is a general wedding reception timeline and an actual DJ playlist from one of my top ten weddings of all time.

    Couples First Dance

Top weddings because when it was time to party, the dance floor was full & happy all night long. So it’s worth sharing what made it happen.

This playlist was created for a general age mix of guests with a slight country feel. There are a few selections from the Bride & Groom in the mix.

2008 was the year of wedding so some of the songs are a little dated at the time of writing this.

But, I hope this gives you some ideas to help with your wedding song selections in 2013 & Beyond!

    6:00pm – Guests Arrive & Cocktail Hour

    Ziggy Marley – Drive
Michael Bublé – The Best Is Yet to Come
Jack Johnson – Dreams be Dreams
    Alex Lloyd – Amazing
Jamie Cullam – What a Difference A Day Made
Dave Matthews Band – Crash Into Me

    Jack Johnson – Better Together
    The Waifs – Lighthouse
Sonia Dada – You Don’t Treat Me No Good No More
Ben Harper – Diamonds On The Inside

    7:30pm – Mains Served

Pace of Music slows down during the main meal – romantic love songs work well.

Maybe a subtle Sing-a -Long song or two at the end of main meal.

Van Morrison – Into the Mystic
    Sting – Fields of Gold
Norah Jones – Come away with me

    9:10pm – Father & Daughter Dance

  • Tips for a Fun & Energetic Wedding DJ Playlist

Tips for a Fun & Energetic Wedding DJ Playlist

Now that the big day is quickly approaching, you have to start putting a little more focus on the playlist for the DJ.

There is nothing worse than a wedding reception that has nothing but dull music.

    Wedding DJ List

The entire point of the wedding reception is to make sure that all of your guests have a great time.

You want them to have so much fun that they never want to go home. You want your wedding to be the wedding that they have great memories of!

When thinking of the various wedding songs that you can pick from, think of your crowd. Is it mostly elderly that will be at the wedding? Or is the room going to be packed full of nothing but a bunch of people in their twenties? Maybe you will have a nice mix of age groups at the reception.

Either way, starting to take a close look at what age groups will be dancing at your reception is the best way to make sure that you are going with the right type of music for them to enjoy.

Now that you have an idea of the era of music you will want to play, it is important to really dig into various tips for creating a fun and energetic wedding DJ playlist.

A good starting point is to remember that you do not want back-to-back slow music.

Even if it is romantic in nature and very good taste in music, you could quickly and easily put a lot of people to sleep this way. Since you are out to make sure everyone has a fun time, this is not the goal that you want to have.

It is also not a good idea to have all kinds of fast playing music repeated one after another.

You can easily wear people out this way and make them tired long before you would like to see them go home. The bride and groom are usually the first people to leave the reception.

Do what you can to make sure that you are not having guests tire out before you do. The basic tips for creating a fun and energetic wedding DJ playlist will tell you that it is important to mix it up a bit.

Play something slow and easy to listen to and then throw something energetic in after.

While there is nothing wrong with two slow songs in a row to allow time for everyone to dance with the bride, you do not want that to go on for too long.

Also feel free to throw in a few of those corny, yet highly anticipated, wedding songs that everyone seems to get a little bit crazy with. Are they tacky?

Possibly – but so many people have fun with these songs that it would be a shame to not include them.

So now that you know a few tips for creating a fun and energetic playlist you can get started creating your list.

The more fun you have putting it together the more fun you will have listening to it and dancing to it on your big day.

Take a look at our Good Party Wedding Song ideas here.

    Good luck with your planning

  • Essential Super Popular Wedding Songs

    Essential Super Popular Wedding Songs

There’s no doubt that want your wedding to be a celebratory, fun, dignified, silly, hoppin’, emotional, groovin’, stately, sexy, bodacious, memorable affair! All you need to do is choose your favorite popular wedding dance songs and let your DJ worry about mixing them up.

    Wedding dance

People go through all kinds of moods at weddings. They feel very festive, because they are dressed up and happy about the wedding. Fast music makes a great start. At other times, there will be very emotional moments when the crowd is tired and wants to slow down, and couples will want to enjoy romantic dances together. Then there are the popular wedding dance songs that the old ladies and the little kids will get up for—well, the kids will get up for anything! And there will be times that you just want to bring everyone to their feet.

What about the traditional crowd movers? Think about these songs…

We are Family, by Sister Sledge

This is a must for sports games, reunions, and weddings. This is a must because you want everyone who has witnessed your wedding to know that You. Are. Familee.

    The Hokey Pokey, By Whoever

Come on, whether or not it’s your favorite, you have to play it for the people who are normally too shy to get up and shake it all about.

The same goes for the Chicken Dance

This is actually a Swiss dance created in the Fifties by an accordionist. It actually originated as the Duck Dance, but when it hit Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the Eighties, no one had a duck costume and history was made.

Are the above two songs too cheesy? Try…

    YMCA by the Village People

Even if you nix the Hokey Pokey and the Chicken Dance, you have to play YMCA. Yes, it speaks to the gaiety in each of us, but it really overtook the world as everyone’s song when Dick Clark launched it on American Bandstand in 1979.

    Gangnam Style by PSY

Yup another silly horse riding dance and in 2013, people groan when they hear it – but still manage to make an effort to take the elevator ride.

Then you need to choose something for a conga line. Yes, a conga line—it will get everyone’s blood moving, including those who might be a little tipsy. You can choose from…

Conga, the obvious choice, by Miami Sound Machine. This one’s great fun, but there are other choices. Hot Hot Hot by Arrow, or choose the version by the Avid All Stars.

Cuban Pete by Jim Carrey and Angie Jaree. Actually, if you’ve never seen Jim Carrey in “The Mask,” you can use the instrumental version of this song simply as a fun samba.

Jump in the Line by Harry Belafonte. And to cool the line down, you can follow this with Harry’s classic Banana Boat Song—you know, “Day-O.”

Of course, you need to fit some lively standards into those popular wedding dance songs so that people can just shake it, shake it, shake it…

    • Play that Funky Music by Wild Cherry
    • Zoot Suit Riot by Cherry Poppin Daddies
    • Smooth by Santana featuring Rob Thomas
    • You Make Me Feel Like Dancing by Leo Sayer

With a select few to slow down pulses…and speed up heart throbs…The Righteous Brothers can bring your evening to a close almost single handedly.

For heaps of wedding song ideas, make sure to check out the ideas listed on the main page of Secret Wedding Songs

  • Tips for a Great DJ Playlist

Tips for a Great DJ Playlist

No matter what style your wedding is, it’s going to be the celebration of your lifetime!  Your wedding DJ music list plays an important part in setting the tone for your evening.  Whether you’re planning a hip bash or a posh soiree, the wedding songs you select will say it all.

    Wedding DJ Spinning Tunes

Take a minute to think about it:  What will your guests remember about your wedding day long after you’ve eaten the top layer of your cake?  They might remember your gown, but they won’t remember your bouquet.  They’ll remember who your attendants were, but they won’t be able to describe the color theme.  They most definitely will, however, remember that they talked and mingled, laughed and danced, and had an overall great time!

Once you’ve chosen a disc jockey, you’ll want to create a wedding DJ music list that will have something on it for your grannie who loves to shake her groove thing, as well as the uncle who does it his way, or your cousin who wants you to play that funky music right, and even your buddy who can’t wait to bust a move.  And don’t forget the elderly aunts who won’t get up unless it’s time for yes.. the Chicken Dance! ;)

Talk to your DJ about the tone you want to set for your reception.  Most likely he’ll have a planning sheet that will help you keep track of your theme and choices.

How many people will there be?

Is this an older crowd, or younger?

Elegant and sophisticated, or the party-hearty types?

For your wedding DJ music list you’ll need about fifteen songs per hour, on the average.  But you don’t have to pick them all!  First of all, your guests are going to have requests.  If they’re really feeling the music, they’ll want to have their say in a few songs.

You also need to let your DJ choose some of them.  He is a professional with a good feel for what will get a crowd up and dancing.  He considers things like tempo, genre, and change-ups to keep your dance floor moving.  You need to give him some latitude so that he can fit in songs where he thinks they’ll work best.

But it’s still important for you to provide him with some basic information.

Once you’ve decided just what tone you’re setting for the reception, put together a wedding DJ music list that includes the following:

    • The names of your special songs. Tell him your choices for the bridal waltz, the bride/father and groom/mother dances, and the other songs used for the longest-married couples, the bouquet and garter tosses, the cake cutting, the goodbye circle, and whatever else you want to celebrate with a song.
    • Your favorite genres. Your DJ can help you build a musical program based on your preferences when he fields requests or chooses songs that aren’t on your list.
    • The names of your favorite songs. These will be the songs not chosen for a special part of the reception that nevertheless have particular meaning for one of you. And they’re the songs that you just love to get up and dance to!
    • The songs that you absolutely hate. If you can’t stand the Chicken Dance, then tell your DJ ahead of time! He knows how to let your guests down easily.

Talk to your DJ well ahead of your wedding day so that you can discuss all this.  Write down your questions so you remember whatever you’d like to ask him.

Your wedding DJ music list will be the heart and soul of your reception, and it will provide lasting memories for you as well as your guests!
